What Is Cost Bracket?
ModelPicker groups models into four price tiers based on output cost: Ultra ($10+/MTok), Mid ($2-10), Value ($0.50-2), and Budget (under $0.50).
Cost brackets help you compare models at similar price points. There's no point comparing a $25/MTok model against a $0.10/MTok model -- they serve different use cases and budgets.
The surprise in our benchmark data is how often cheaper brackets compete with more expensive ones. Mistral Medium 3.1 in the Value bracket ($2/MTok output) scored 3.00/3 on our benchmarks, matching or beating models in the Ultra bracket at 10x the price. Budget models like Ministral 3B ($0.10/MTok) score 3/3 on structured output and constrained rewriting.
The right bracket depends on your use case and volume. For prototyping, Ultra is fine. For production at scale, find the cheapest model in Value or Budget that passes your quality bar.
